Nintendo's Long-Rumored Switch 2 Finally Has a Clear Reveal Window

Right now, a large part of the online Nintendo fandom has its eyes fixed on the developer and publisher’s various social media channels. The exact time and date that it will be revealed is still unknown, but the November 5 Nintendo financial report has reiterated that the long rumored Nintendo Switch successor will be publicly unveiled before April 2025.

With the Nintendo Switch having been around since March 2017, this Nintendo console generation will have lasted an unprecedented eight years, and fans are eager for a change.

The only thing in the way at this point is Nintendo's unwillingness to pull the trigger on an announcement. So much information on the upcoming Nintendo console has leaked that the public may already know its hardware specs and internal name, but the system and its games remain a mystery.

Nintendo even officially admitted that a console was coming around halfway through 2024, but still nothing substantial came. All that can be said for certain is that an announcement will happen before the end of March 2025, and with the year in question approaching, a likely window for the reveal is coming into view.

The Switch 2’s Reveal Is Closing In Fast

As of this writing, there are less than five months left until Nintendo reaches its deadline for revealing the Switch’s successor.

While that announcement could surprise fans at any time, what's known about the immediate future and Nintendo's history can help narrow down when, exactly, the news will break. Starting with Nintendo's game lineup, the last known Nintendo-published game in 2024 is November 7’s Mario & Luigi: Brothership, after which there will be nothing until Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on January 16, 2025, and Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on March 20, 2025.

That leaves plenty of room for a reveal, and certain months weighted in its favor.

Which Months The Nintendo Switch Successor Will Likely Be Announced In

November isn't a likely month given that the aforementioned Nintendo financial report and Mario & Luigi release are both in its first week.

Something could arrive in its last week, but that isn't likely. On the other hand, February and March feel like they're too late. That leaves December and January, and these make up the most likely reveal window for the Nintendo Switch 2. Dropping the reveal at the 2024 Game Awards probably won't happen, as much as viewers would love that, but either another hint from a Nintendo representative or a date for the presentation in the coming weeks is possible.

One Period Feels Like Nintendo's Ideal Time For An Announcement

Whittling things down further, Nintendo tends to prefer doing presentations later in the month, which is evidence for the last couple of weeks of December, but there is pertinent evidence for the contrary.

The Nintendo Switch’s reveal may be a tough act to follow, but it was divided into a reveal trailer, released October 20, 2016, a preview with Jimmy Fallon on his show in December 2016, and a live-streamed press event on January 13, 2017. It may be Nintendo's intention to bundle these individual instances into one presentation this time, falling somewhere in, again, the late December or early January time slots.

Nailing Down The Switch 2’s Precise Reveal Window

December is a possibility, but January feels more likely.

While the Nintendo Switch was released before the end of the fiscal year 2016, which would have been the end of March 2017, the language used regarding the Switch 2 implies that it will not launch in fiscal 2024, only be announced. Thus, it would be sensible to have a reveal as close to its real launch as feasible, so an early January presentation, possibly close to the same day as the original Switch’s informational stream, is the most likely.

Fans could get a hint from Nintendo to tide them over in December, but the Nintendo Switch successor’s reveal window most likely lies at the beginning of 2025.
